The Karen, Thai-Burma border, 2004
Maung Aye and his daughters in the Lep Per Her camp.
He lost his leg two years ago after stepping on a landmine on the outskirts of his village, laid by the DKBA (Democratic Karen Buddhist Army, a Karen splinter organisation allied with the Burmese military).
On hearing the explosion, his uncle ran to help him, but stepped on another one and was killed.
Many landmine victims die from their wounds due to the area’s remoteness and the lack of treatment facilities.
