For most of the winter and spring months Joey will fish for mackerel along the coast from Newlyn and as the fish move 'around the corner' to St. Ives during the summer months, the fishermen will follow them.
Handlining for mackerel is one of the most eco-friendly and sustainable forms of fishing and is usually done in the morning and evening. Joey will leave the harbour as early as 3.30 a.m. in order to reach the fishing grounds by dawn.
After a few hours, the boat is packed full of fish and the hour long journey back to Newlyn is made so that the catch can be unloaded, graded, weighed and packed with ice into the market's freezer, ready for the following morning's auction.
Normally he would make a second trip later on in the day, but fishing has been good this morning and he senses that the shoals are still there and so heads straight back out.
Joey has had various jobs within the fishing industry in Newlyn and now, as a highly experienced handline fisherman, he will be fishing for the much prized Bass later on in the year.
